A city plan for Melbourne
Melbourne will be split into five different cities if I get a seat in the Victorian Parliament at next year’s state election.
It is a plan that will ensure most Melbournians (around 80% of them) can get to work within 30 minutes of where they live, and is similar to the Sydney’s proposal of three cities. This can also play a part in solving traffic congestion and overcrowding on public transport.
The five cities for Melbourne will be devised as follows:
· Melbourne inner CBD city – the heart of Melbourne, attracting large businesses and corporations, and will have a financial district incorporated, along with retail and nightlife precincts
· Melbourne South Eastern city (Dandenong) – will attract workers from Melbourne’s south east and the Gippsland region, and will form Melbourne’s second city. Contains small businesses and a legal precinct
· Melbourne Eastern city (Box Hill) – home to high rise apartments which are the highest outside of the Melbourne CBD. An expanded and upgraded shopping precinct will enhance the Box Hill area.
· Melbourne Western city (East Werribee) – to be transformed into an Education precinct, containing a university and a selection of secondary schools including a secondary campus for Suzanne Cory select entry school. Will attract people from Melbourne’s west, Geelong and western Victoria.
· Melbourne Northern city (Melbourne Airport) – an aerotropolis similar to the one planned around Sydney’s Badgery’s Creek Airport will be built. It will feature a business/industrial precinct, and a large retail complex within a walking distance to Melbourne Airport terminals.
With Melbourne’s population increasing at a rapid rate it is vital we start planning now to reduce potential impacts in the near future.
