Response to Victoria’s euthanasia laws
Victoria’s euthanasia laws (also known as voluntary assisted dying laws) have been debated in the Victorian Parliament for many months, and yesterday it was finally made law.
I welcome this announcement, as it gives the terminally ill people the moral and ethical rights to die with dignity and peace.
We do not know what may, or may not happen in our lives. But one thing for sure is that those with incurable illnesses will be given a choice.
The benefits of allowing euthanasia include reduced strain on our hospital system and reduced financial burden on families, but ultimately the choice is up to the patient.
Euthanasia is a very challenging topic to debate and discuss. Whilst the option of voluntary assisted dying will be available from 2019 it does come with some guidelines to prevent misuse of the system.
I support the all the criteria and safeguards made by Daniel Andrews and the Labor government, which sets the precedent for euthanasia laws around the world, and applaud them for their commitment to, and handling, of the issue.
Compassion is a key attribute that Victoria upholds. And the passing of euthanasia laws yesterday is just one example.
